Whirlpool Fridge Ice Maker Not Working

An ice maker that's stopped producing has a short list of causes: it isn't getting water, the freezer isn't cold enough, or the ice maker itself has failed. You can check the first two yourself.

The same logic applies to most brands with this style of module, including Jenn-Air units that share Whirlpool components.

Water supply and temperature

  • Confirm the ice maker's on switch or feeler arm isn't in the off/raised position.
  • Check the water line behind the fridge for kinks, and make sure the shutoff valve is fully open.
  • A clogged or overdue water filter chokes flow — replace it if it's been more than six months.
  • The freezer needs to be at or below −18 °C to cycle ice reliably. Too warm, and the mould never reaches harvest temperature.

When it's the ice maker or inlet valve

If water reaches the fridge but the maker stays empty, the water inlet valve may be failing, or the ice maker module's motor, thermostat, or heater has worn out.

These are testable with a meter and usually replaced as an assembly. A frozen-solid fill tube is also common — a sign the inlet valve is leaking by and refreezing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Whirlpool ice maker take to make ice?+
After a reset or filter change, give it about 24 hours to fill the first bin. A single harvest cycle takes roughly 90 minutes to two hours.
Why is the fill tube on my ice maker frozen?+
A frozen fill tube usually means the water inlet valve is leaking a trickle that refreezes between cycles. Thawing it is temporary — the valve is the real fix.
