Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining — Where to Look

Water sitting in the bottom of a Bosch dishwasher after a cycle is one of the most common faults we get called for. The good news: most of the time it's a clog you can clear in fifteen minutes, not a broken pump. The drain path is short, and you can work it end to end.

If yours is showing an E24, the cause is the same — that's just Bosch's name for this drainage fault.

Work the drain path in order

  • Scoop out the standing water, then twist out the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub and rinse off the food and grease. A clogged filter is the number-one cause.
  • Check the sump underneath the filter for glass, a bone, or a bit of plastic jamming the impeller.
  • Pull the dishwasher's drain hose and check for kinks behind the unit and where it ties into the sink plumbing.
  • If it drains into a new garburator, confirm the knockout plug was removed during install — a forgotten plug blocks drainage completely.

The high loop and air gap

Bosch dishwashers rely on the drain hose being looped up high under the counter (or running through an air gap) so dirty sink water can't siphon back in. If the hose has slipped down, you'll get poor draining and dirty water sitting in the tub. Re-securing the high loop fixes a surprising number of these.

When it's the drain pump

If the filter, hose, and high loop are all clear and water still won't leave — or the E24 keeps returning — the drain pump itself is likely failing or jammed. You'll sometimes hear it hum without moving water. Replacing the pump means accessing it from underneath, so unless you're comfortable pulling the unit, that's the point to call a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a little water left in my Bosch after every cycle?+
A small amount of clean water around the filter is normal — it keeps the seals from drying out. A full pool of dirty water is the problem.
Is E24 the same as not draining?+
Yes. E24 is Bosch's drainage error — the dishwasher detected it couldn't pump the water out. The checks are identical: filter, hose, high loop, then pump.
