Dryer Guide
Why Won't My Dryer Heat Up?
A dryer that tumbles but doesn't heat is a classic failure — and a frustrating one, since the clothes come out just as wet as they went in. The cause is usually a single failed heating component or a tripped safety device.
The usual suspects
- A burnt-out heating element (electric dryers) or failed igniter (gas dryers).
- A blown thermal fuse — often tripped by a clogged vent overheating the dryer.
- A faulty thermostat or thermal cut-off.
- A tripped half of the 240 V breaker — the dryer turns but won't heat.
- A badly clogged vent restricting airflow and tripping the safety devices.
Start with the vent
A surprising number of no-heat calls trace back to a lint-clogged vent. Restricted airflow makes the dryer overheat and trip its thermal fuse — and if you only replace the fuse without clearing the vent, it'll blow again. Clean the full vent run first, then test.
If the breaker, vent, and fuse all check out and there's still no heat, the element or igniter is the likely failure and needs a meter to confirm.
