Dryer Not Spinning? Causes & Fixes
There are two versions of this problem, and telling them apart is half the diagnosis. Either the dryer powers on and heats but the drum sits still, or it won't start at all. Each points to a different set of parts.
It hums or heats, but the drum won't turn
- A snapped drive belt — the most common cause; the drum turns loosely by hand.
- A seized drum roller or idler pulley jamming the drum against the belt.
- A worn motor that hums but can't turn under load.
- A drum bearing or glide that's failed and locked the drum.
It's completely dead — won't even start
- A faulty door switch — the dryer won't run unless it senses the door is shut.
- A blown thermal fuse, which on some models cuts the motor, not just the heat.
- A failed start switch, or a broken belt that tripped the motor's safety switch.
- No power — a tripped breaker or a fault in the cord or outlet.
Quick checks before you call
Open the door and press the door switch by hand while listening for the click — a worn switch is a cheap, common fix. Then reach in and spin the drum: if it turns with no resistance and the motor hums, you're looking at the belt. If it barely moves or grinds, a roller or bearing has seized. A dryer that's totally silent with no response usually comes down to the door switch, thermal fuse, or power supply, all of which need a meter to confirm.
