Samsung Dryer Drum Not Turning

When a Samsung dryer powers on and you hear the motor hum but the drum sits still, the problem is mechanical: the belt, the idler pulley that tensions it, or the motor itself.

Here's how to tell which, and why the belt is the place to start.

The belt is the usual cause

A long, thin belt wraps the drum and runs over a spring-loaded idler pulley to the motor. When it snaps — the most common failure — the motor spins freely but the drum doesn't move, and the dryer often feels like it 'starts' but does nothing.

A quick tell: with the dryer off, the drum will spin much too easily by hand if the belt has broken, with none of the usual resistance.

Idler pulley and motor

  • A worn idler pulley squeals or grinds and can stop tensioning the belt properly.
  • If the belt is intact and the pulley turns freely but the drum still won't spin under power, the drive motor may have failed.
  • A drum roller or bearing that's seized can also bind the drum so the motor can't turn it.

Why this is a technician job

Reaching the belt and motor means opening the cabinet and lifting out the drum. It's doable, but Samsung dryers route the belt over the motor and idler in a specific way that's easy to get wrong — and a mis-routed belt fails again fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Samsung dryer run with a broken belt?+
The motor will run and you'll hear it, but the drum won't turn, so nothing dries. Running it that way won't cause further harm, but there's no point until the belt is replaced.
