Samsung French Door Fridge Leaking Water Under the Drawer
Water pooling under the deli or crisper drawer of a Samsung French door fridge is one of the most reported Samsung faults — and it has a specific, well-known cause. The defrost drain at the back of the freezer keeps freezing over, so meltwater backs up and finds its way under the drawers above instead of draining away.
Samsung even issues a clip for it. Here's what's going on and how it gets fixed for good.
Why it happens on these models
During each automatic defrost, frost on the evaporator melts and is meant to run down a small drain tube to a pan underneath, where it evaporates. On many Samsung French door models the drain sits right below the defrost heater, and a little water re-freezes at the drain opening between cycles. Over time it builds into a plug of ice. With nowhere to go, the next defrost's water overflows — under the drawers, then onto the floor.
The fix
- Clear the ice: the drain is reached from inside the freezer, behind the back panel. The plug of ice has to be melted and the tube flushed clear.
- Fit the drain clip (Samsung's own remedy): a small metal clip attaches to the defrost heater and sits in the drain tube, conducting a little heat down to keep the opening from re-freezing.
- Confirm the fridge is level and the door seals close fully — a fridge tilted forward or a poor seal makes frost and drainage worse.
When it's not the drain
If the water is near the front by the dispenser rather than under the drawers, suspect the water line or filter housing instead. And if ice keeps building heavily on the back wall even after the drain is clear, the defrost heater or sensor may be failing — that's a separate repair from the drain clip. Either way, a technician can clear the drain, fit the clip, and check the defrost system in one visit.
