Samsung Washer UE / Ur Error: Unbalanced Load Explained

Samsung washer repair
A Samsung front-load washer with the front panel off during a repair in Toronto.

Your Samsung washer gets to the spin, shudders, drains, tries again, then gives up and shows UE. Or Ur. Or Ub, depending on the model and its age. All three are the same family: the machine has decided the load is too uneven to spin safely.

Once in a while that's just a bath mat wrapped around a pair of jeans. Every load is a different story.

What the codes actually mean

  • UE, Ub, U6, 1Ub, 1U6: unbalanced load detected. Samsung's fix is to open the door, untangle and rearrange the laundry, close it, and press Start.
  • Ur: unbalanced load retry. The washer is adding water and redistributing the load to try the spin again. Samsung is clear that Ur by itself isn't a fault; it's the machine telling you what it's doing.
  • dc: on some models this is the unbalanced code, on others it's a door error. Check the manual for your model before assuming.

Fix it yourself in most cases

Start with the load. A single heavy item (one duvet, one bath mat, a pair of wet jeans on its own) is the classic trigger. Samsung's advice is to add a few towels so the weight spreads out, and to avoid stuffing the drum full.

Then check the machine is level. Put a spirit level on the lid or top panel and adjust the feet until it doesn't rock in any direction, and lock the feet nuts afterwards. Washers that were pushed back after a floor clean or a move are often sitting on one high foot.

Many Samsung models also have a calibration mode that re-teaches the control the weight of the empty drum. The button sequence varies by model, so use the steps in your user manual. Run it with the drum empty and the machine level.

If the washer was just delivered, make sure the shipping bolts on the back have been removed. They lock the drum solid and will throw balance codes on every cycle.

When it happens on every load

A washer that throws UE with a normal mixed load, on a level floor, is telling you the suspension is tired. On Samsung top-loaders, four suspension rods hold the tub; when their dampers wear, the tub sits low, bangs on spin, and can't settle. Samsung issued an updated-design rod assembly for some top-load models with repeat UE and dc codes. Front-loaders use shock absorbers and springs instead, and worn shocks let the drum swing wide enough to trip the same sensor.

We check the rods or shocks first, then the tub bearings and the counterweights, then the hall sensor and motor drive that report drum speed to the board. If everything mechanical is sound and the load genuinely isn't unbalanced, the control board is the remaining suspect. That's the last thing to replace, not the first.

When to book a repair

  • UE or Ub on most loads even after levelling and rearranging.
  • The tub sits visibly lower on one side, or thumps against the cabinet on spin.
  • You've replaced suspension parts and the code still returns.
  • The washer walks across the floor, or the lid or door lock trips mid-spin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is UE the same as Ur on a Samsung washer?+
Related but not identical. Ur means the washer is retrying the spin after rebalancing; UE means it has given up on that attempt. If you see Ur often but the cycle finishes, keep an eye on loading. If it ends in UE, act on it.
Can worn suspension rods be replaced on a Samsung top-loader?+
Yes, and it's one of the more common Samsung washer repairs we do. All four rods are replaced as a set, with the updated design where Samsung has one for your model.
Why does it happen with bedding but not with clothes?+
A duvet or a bath mat soaks up water unevenly and clumps on one side of the drum. Add a couple of towels to balance it, or wash bedding on the cycle your manual lists for bulky items.
