Dryer Guide
Samsung Dryer Won't Start
A dryer that lights up but won't start a cycle when you press the button — door firmly closed — usually has a small electrical fault holding it back rather than a major failure.
The door switch is the first thing to check, because the dryer won't run a cycle unless it reads the door as closed.
Door switch and start button
- Open and firmly close the door — listen for the latch click. If it doesn't seat, the dryer thinks it's open and won't start.
- A worn door switch fails to confirm 'closed' even when the door is shut; it's a common, inexpensive part.
- Hold the Start button firmly — a tired start switch sometimes needs a deliberate press to register.
Thermal fuse and power
Electric dryers run on a 240V circuit split across two breakers. If half the power is lost, the dryer may light up but refuse to start the motor — check both breaker legs.
A blown thermal fuse, often caused by a clogged vent overheating the dryer, also stops it from starting. The fuse is a safety device, so if it's blown, the vent should be cleared at the same time or it'll blow again.
